Bridgestone Battlax BT-016 Hypersport

Engineered using MotoGP technology. Developed with input by World Champion XYZ. This is the kind of marketing rhetoric that we hear all the time in the sportbike world--especially when it comes to tires. Yes, it's pretty obvious that Bridgestone is keen on publicizing that its newest high-performance sportbike tire, the Battlax BT-016, is a direct result of their success in Grand Prix racing. Yet when we first heard the aforementioned propaganda we were skeptical.
That is until we experienced its new rubber on this year's Suzuki GSX-R600/GSX-R750 as well as on the all-new '08 Kawasaki ZX-10R (as they are standard OE fitment on these three models)

Pirelli - C. SpA, Europe's third-largest tire maker after Michelin and Continental AG, reported Tuesday a first-half loss versus a profit a year earlier because of higher raw material costs and following a writedown on the value of its stake in phone company Telecom Italia SpA.
The net loss was 36.2 million euros ($56 million) compared with net income of 108.2 million euros ($167.3 million) a year earlier, Milan-based Pirelli said. The stock jumped 7.5 percent in Milan trading after the company forecast the tire unit's second-half operating results, excluding restructuring costs, will about match last year's

act Check: Properly inflated tires cut gas use
1 day ago
WASHINGTON (AP) John McCain and his Republican Party are gleefully mocking Democratic presidential candidate Barack Obama's suggestion that properly inflated tires could help save oil. The thing is, there's some truth to it.
Obama may have exaggerated when he said simply inflating tires and getting regular tuneups would save just as much oil as the offshore drilling McCain is proposing. But automotive experts long have suggested those steps to cut gas bills.
THE SPIN:
Obama told voters at a campaign stop last week in Springfield, Mo., that they can take steps individually to save energy.
'Making sure your tires are properly inflated, simple thing, but we could save all the oil that they're talking about getting off drilling, if everybody was just inflating their tires and getting regular tuneups,' Obama said. 'You could actually save just as much.'
Republicans are ridiculing the suggestion that inflated tires could be the solution to dependence on foreign oil

(Rochester, N.Y.) - The presidential candidates have been sparring over the past week about a comment made by senator Barack Obama, who advised Americans to check the air pressure on their tires to improve gas mileage. The McCain campaign has belittled the remark, even passing out air gauges to reporters. But the idea is more than just hot air: experts agree on the effects of low air pressure in car tires: It's just robbing gas mileage, said Mike Papa of Total Car Care. Papa's staff not only checks the tires, but encourages their customers to check and inflate their tires once a month. I've had some comments on the noticeable improvement in fuel mileage, and with what fuel is costing today, it makes a big difference, Papa said. For years, the magic number for tires has been 35 psi (pounds per square inch.) But many tires now go up to 44, which means you can safely go with 40 psi. We decided to use a simple gauge to see if drivers know what their tire pressure is.Louie Levine said he expected his tire pressure to be pretty close to 32 pounds per square inch. When we checked and found it was just under 30 psi, he said, Well, if I was checking it I'd probably fill it up to what it should be. With the prices about $4 a gallon, anything I could do to save a little would be helpful.>Yet mechanics say the majority of their customers come in for tune ups or oil changes with the wrong amount of air in their tires

MOORESVILLE, N.C. -- A week that began with NASCAR apologizing for the embarrassing tire situation at the Brickyard, ended in similar fashion as Pocono winner Carl Edwards apologized for fighting with crew chief Bob Osborne over pit strategy in Sunday's Sprint Cup race. In other words, just another week at the races.
But there's another person who has a little apologizing to do. And it's none other that Dale Earnhardt Jr., himself.
In the wake of the Allstate 400 at Indy, where Goodyear's tires were so bad that the longest green-flag run was 12 laps, Earnhardt had this to say last week: I'll tell you this. Tony George [owner of the Indianapolis Motor Speedway] said that they weren't changing the track and I don't blame them. It's expensive to pave the track

Carl Edwards, who won Sunday's much dryer race at Pocono, actually stuck a squeegee out the window while driving under caution to try to clear a line of sight.
In the end, Dale Earnhardt Jr.'s driver, Ron Fellows, won the race that was shortened from 74 to 48 laps. He did it on 1999 Goodyear rain tires.
Most drivers were pleased with how the grooved tires worked in the rain, although NASCAR probably won't make a habit of running races in the rain.
'We felt the race probably came off as good as it could have,' Robin Pemberton, vice president of competition for NASCAR, said Sunday at Pocono Raceway. 'In hindsight, there might have been one or two little things we could have done different

PHILADELPHIA (CNN) - Mark Salter, a top adviser to John McCain, gleefully distributed tire pressure gauges to McCains traveling press corps on Monday morning, a sight gag meant to mock Barack Obamas remark last week that making sure your tires are properly inflated could help conserve gasoline.
Before departing for Pennsylvania, Salter told the press on board McCains plane that campaign staffers had brought along copies of Obamas energy plan for reporters to study during the trip. After takeoff, Salter re-emerged with his punch line, passing out the pressure gauges reading Obamas Energy Plan to the journalists on the flight

As many as 30 million tires on the road are at risk of blowing out, causing a serious, even fatal accident. The problems are potentially faulty tire valves. The valves have been recalled but plenty of them are still out there.
It's not easy to tell if your tire has one of these valves. At a minimum, Consumer Reports says you should check your tires' pressure at least once a month and inspect the valves for any cracks

Fluff pumps up tires, local business
Firm adds foam injection to its products line
By AUDREY PARENTE Staff Writer
A new twist to a family-owned, lawnmower-parts distribution business is propelling Edgewater Power - Small Engine Service through hard economic times into a busy future.
In addition to selling 35,000 different blades, motor and garden tool parts worldwide, the local company is providing a new product at its 301 Mango Tree Drive plant.
The site is one of only a few worldwide offering 'flat-free' foam injection in tires for everything from lawn mowers, wheelbarrows and golf carts to airport shuttles, mobility scooters and other small vehicles.
The ultralightweight polyurethane foam injection is good for speeds up to 50 mph in 36-inch and smaller tires.
'Between lack of rain and the economy, it has been bumpy for the past 2 1 2 years, so we were looking at adding new products,' said Jim Poland, 66, who heads the Edgewater company. 'One problem lawn equipment has is tires breaking down, and this product maintains tires to last four times as long as regular tires.'
Poland said doing the foam injecting seemed like a good idea.
'The initial investment in the machine and chemicals was $40,000,' said Jim's son, Chad Poland, the third generation to work in the family company.
The foam injection operation uses a science-fiction looking machine that spews dangerously hot, expanding white foam that hardens as it cools

You never realized it would be so easy to solve America's energy dependence crisis: Simply put air in your car tires, as presumptive Democratic presidential candidate Barack Obama has affirmed.
But maybe you're among the many doubters, and that perhaps is why for an unprecedented sixth straight week, the NObama 08 Magnetic Bumper Sticker is the No. 1 pick among best-sellers at Shop.WND.com.
In an address to fans in Missouri last week, Obama said, 'There are things you can do individually, though, to save energy. Making sure your tires are properly inflated simple thing. But we could save all the oil that they're talking about getting off drilling if everybody was just inflating their tires? And getting regular tune-ups? You'd actually save just as much!'
Presumptive GOP candidate Sen. John McCain this week was poking fun at the statement, with an offer to generate support for his campaign of a tire air pressure tester called Obama's energy policy in return for a donation.
(Story continues below)

The removable, magnetic bumper sticker measures 15 inches by nearly four inches and is perfect not only for your car, but for your refrigerator, file cabinet any magnetic surface where you would like to make a statement

DOW JONES NEWSWIRES
Cooper Tire - Rubber Co. (CTB) swung to a second-quarter loss on a steep drop in margins as the company faced 'intense challenges.'
The company has struggled as raw materials have become more expensive and less available, deflating margins on its low-end tires. The tough conditions in the auto market and the overall economic decline are also contributing to Cooper's slide. As consumers drive less their tires survive longer, cutting into Cooper's key market of replacements.
The company posted a net loss of $22.2 million, or 38 cents, a share, compared with net income of $17.6 million, or 28 cents, a year earlier

From a fan's point of view the race at the Brickyard was certainly disappointing. From a team's perspective the race was not fun. But Goodyear can only do their best.
Goodyear is to blame in that in the tire test at Indy earlier this year, they invited only three teams and after the test they saw the same results that were seen this past Sunday at the Brickyard 400.
However, one comment about the tire wear made a great deal of sense, and I would like to share it with you and get your opinion. On an episode of NASCAR Raceday, Kenny Wallace said that everything about the new car got bigger, except the tires.
Think about it

Villeneuve was placed 16th for failing to maintain the pace under a yellow flag.
It was the first time a NASCAR race has ever been run in rain and while there were fewer crack-ups than anticipated, it ultimately became undrivable and several drivers asked race officials to stop it. The faster cars went, the more spray went up into the windshields of cars following.
The only previous times the grooved rain tires went on were at a practice for a Craftsman Truck event in 1997 at Watkins Glen, and in qualifying at an exhibition race in Japan in 1999.
I thought we'd have a lot more guys spin and go off the track but the guys were good,'' said Carpentier. I was mad that they stopped it, but they had to.''
Fellows has seen it all in motor racing, having won in his class at the Le Mans 24 Hour race and in other road racing series where racing in rain is common

Over the past few days, McCain's campaign has needled Obama for saying that keeping tires inflated would save enough oil to obviate the need for expanded offshore drilling. Republicans tried to link Obama's comments with Jimmy Carter's exhortations to save on heating bills by wearing sweaters.
'We could save all the oil that they're talking about getting off drilling if everybody was just inflating their tires and getting regular tune-ups. You could actually save just as much,' Obama told a rally Thursday in Springfield, Mo.
The Republican National Committee offered Monday to send reporters tire gauges as a stunt to mark Obama's birthday, and McCain's campaign sold an 'Obama Energy Plan' tire gauge for a $25 donation.
'We need to offshore drill for oil and natural gas
