Pirelli - C. SpA, Europe's third-largest tire maker after Michelin and Continental AG, reported Tuesday a first-half loss versus a profit a year earlier because of higher raw material costs and following a writedown on the value of its stake in phone company Telecom Italia SpA.
The net loss was 36.2 million euros ($56 million) compared with net income of 108.2 million euros ($167.3 million) a year earlier, Milan-based Pirelli said. The stock jumped 7.5 percent in Milan trading after the company forecast the tire unit's second-half operating results, excluding restructuring costs, will about match last year's
