Cooper Tire - Rubber Co. (CTB) swung to a second-quarter loss on a steep drop in margins as the company faced 'intense challenges.'
The company has struggled as raw materials have become more expensive and less available, deflating margins on its low-end tires. The tough conditions in the auto market and the overall economic decline are also contributing to Cooper's slide. As consumers drive less their tires survive longer, cutting into Cooper's key market of replacements.
The company posted a net loss of $22.2 million, or 38 cents, a share, compared with net income of $17.6 million, or 28 cents, a year earlier
